Reducing Anxiety & Boredom-Driven Barking
Does your dog bark or panic when you leave? The key is gradual desensitization and calm departures & returns—teaching them that alone time is normal and stress-free!
What to Expect
Practice: 3–5 times per week, 10–15 minutes per session
Best Times: Before short errands or whenever you leave/return home
Stay Calm & Consistent: The more low-key you make comings and goings, the more relaxed your dog will be.
Step-by-Step Training Guide
1️⃣ Start with Quick Exits
Step out for 5 seconds, then return.
If your dog stays quiet and calm, reward with treats or praise.
2️⃣ Gradually Increase Time
Slowly increase absences to a few minutes, then longer.
If your dog seems anxious, dial it back and go slower.
3️⃣ Use a Calm Departure Cue
Say “Be right back” before leaving.
Keep it neutral—no big goodbyes!
4️⃣ Ignore Over-Excited Greetings
When you return, wait until your dog is calm before giving attention.
Reward relaxed behavior, not jumping or barking.
5️⃣ Keep Them Busy Before You Leave
Offer a stuffed Kong, Lickimat, or puzzle toy 5–10 minutes before heading out.
Keeps their mind focused on something fun instead of your absence.
