Recap from this lesson

  • Guiding Your Dog Away from Temptation

Poop eating often happens during potty breaks, but with the right leash techniques, you can prevent access before it starts!

    What to Expect

    • Practice: Every potty walk, using leash guidance

    • Best Times: Anytime your dog goes outside

    • Goal: Keep control and redirect them before they get to poop

    Step-by-Step Plan

1️⃣ Keep a Short Leash Near Poop Zones

    • If your dog usually finds poop in specific spots, keep their leash shor

    • ter in these areas.

    • Guide them toward a cleaner potty spot.

2️⃣ Use a Gentle “This Way” Cue

    • If your dog starts moving toward poop, lightly guide them in the other direction.

    • Say “This Way” in a happy voice and reward them for following you.

3️⃣ Avoid Letting Them Sniff Too Long

    • Watch your dog’s body language—if they start sniffing too intently, move them along before they fixate on poop.

    • A quick pace helps prevent poop-searching behavior.

4️⃣ Pair with “Leave It” Training

    • If they lock onto poop, use “Leave It” and reward them for ignoring it.

    • This strengthens their ability to walk past poop without interest.

Paw Tip: If your dog pulls toward poop, redirect with movement, NOT by yanking the leash!
