Recap from this lesson

  • Teaching Your Dog to Resist Temptation

A strong “Leave It” command is essential for stopping poop eating! By building impulse control, your dog learns to ignore poop and other tempting distractions.

    What to Expect

    • Practice: 3–5 times per week, 5–10 minutes per session

    • Best Times: During walks, potty breaks, or playtime

    • Goal: Teach your dog to pause and make better choices when they see poop

    Step-by-Step Plan

1️⃣ Start with a Treat in Your Hand

    • Hold a treat in a closed fist and say “Leave It”.

    • If your dog backs off, reward them with a better treat from the other hand.

2️⃣ Move to Treats on the Floor

    • Place a treat on the ground, cover it with your hand, and repeat “Leave It”.

    • Once your dog waits calmly, reward with a tastier treat.

3️⃣ Practice with More Tempting Items

    • Try different objects like toys, kibble, or even poop (on a leash at a safe distance!).

    • Keep rewarding self-control and ignoring the distraction.

    4️⃣ Apply It During Walks

    • When your dog notices poop, say “Leave It” before they approach.

    • Reward them for turning away and focusing on you.

Paw Tip: A high-value reward (something better than poop!) makes all the difference. Find their favorite with our Taste Test Kit!
