Understanding Miso’s Barking & Creating a Calm Environment

Why does Miso bark?

Miso’s barking is fear-based, mostly triggered by:

βœ… Other dogs (on walks, through windows)

βœ… Unfamiliar noises (street sounds, doorbells, knocks)

Since she’s a young puppy, this is the perfect time to teach her how to feel safe and prevent these behaviors from becoming lifelong habits.

🐾 What You Can Do Today

1️⃣ Set Up a Calm Home Environment

Miso’s living space plays a big role in her stress levels. Here are easy ways to make her feel safer:

β€’ Use white noise (fan, soft music) to mask sudden sounds.

β€’ Keep curtains closed if she reacts to movement outside.

β€’ Create a safe zone (a cozy corner with a comfy bed) where she can retreat when overwhelmed.

2️⃣ Noise Desensitization (5-10 min/day)

Miso barks at sudden sounds because they startle her. This exercise will help her get used to noises in a safe way:

  1. Play recorded sounds (dog barking, doorbell, street noise) at a very low volume while she eats.

  2. If she stays calm, praise and reward.

  3. Gradually increase the volume over a few days, making sure she stays relaxed.

3️⃣ Introduce a β€œQuiet” Cue

If Miso starts barking, try this:

  1. Say a calm β€œShhh” or β€œQuiet” (don’t yell).

  2. The moment she stops barking (even for a second), reward with a treat.

  3. Repeat this to help her understand that silence = rewards.
