Recap from this lesson

  • Does your pup bark out of frustration or excitement? Impulse control games teach patience, focus, and self-regulation — helping them stay calm even in high-energy moments!

    • Practice: 3–4 times per week, 5–10 minutes per session

    • Best Times: Before meals, playtime, or high-energy activities

    • Why It Works: Rewarding calm behavior builds long-term self-control!

    Step-by-Step Guide

1️⃣ Look at Me – Redirecting Focus

    • Call your dog’s name or make a fun sound (kissy noise, “pss pss!”).

    • The moment they look at you, say “Yes!” and give a treat.

    • Gradually increase distractions as your dog improves.

    2️⃣ Wait With Food – Teaching Self-Control

    • Hold a treat and say “Wait.”

    • Only give it when your dog remains calm (no barking, pawing, or jumping).

Paw Tip: Hold the treat in a closed palm first. When your dog waits, open your hand and reward. Add the cue “Wait” after a few successful tries!

    3️⃣ Sit-Stay Before Walks – Calmness Opens Doors 🚪

    • Ask for a sit before opening the door.

    • If they jump or bark, close the door and try again.

    • Repeat until they stay calm — then reward by heading outside!

4️⃣ Leave It – Strengthening Impulse Control

    • Place a treat on the floor and cover it with your hand.

    • If your dog waits instead of diving in, reward them with the treat.

    • Gradually increase difficulty by removing your hand.

5️⃣ Slow Down Greetings – No More Excited Barking!

    • Ignore barking or jumping when greeting your dog.

    • Once they settle, reward calm behavior with attention and praise.

Paw Tip: Stay calm yourself! Your energy influences their response.

6️⃣ Use a Release Cue – Teaching Your Dog When to Move

    • Pick a release word like “Okay!”

    • Use it to signal when your dog can move, eat, or play.

Paw Tip: This works great for mealtimes, waiting at doors, and play commands!
