Helping Momo Stay Calm Around Unexpected Noises
Hey Ana, welcome to your final lesson! π You and Momo have made incredible progress, and now itβs time to work on one of the trickiest parts β helping him stay calm around unexpected loud noises.
Need a refresher on exercises to reduce Momoβs barking?
How to Teach Momo to Stay Calm with Gradual Exposure
Barking at noises is often a mix of alertness, anxiety, and excitement. Momo isnβt barking to be difficult β heβs reacting instinctively. But we can help him feel secure and shift his response from barking to a calmer behavior.
The key? Controlled exposure and positive reinforcement. This will teach Momo that loud noises donβt predict danger and that staying quiet brings better rewards.
Step 1: Controlled Doorbell & Noise Training
π Practice: 4-5 times per week
π Best times: At different times throughout the day, especially when external noises are expected.
β³ Duration: 5-10 minutes per session
Step-by-Step Training Guide:
Start with a soft version of the trigger β Play a doorbell or knocking sound at a low volume.
Reward calmness instantly β If Momo stays quiet, say "Yes!" and give him a treat. If he barks, stay calm and wait for a brief pause before rewarding.
Gradually increase intensity β Over time, make the sound slightly louder or closer, always rewarding Momo when he remains calm.
Pair the noise with a positive experience β Right after the sound, give Momo something enjoyable, like a treat or a puzzle toy, so he begins to associate noises with good things.
Introduce real-life scenarios β Have a friend ring the actual doorbell while you guide Momo to stay relaxed. Redirect his focus with a "sit" or "look at me" command before rewarding.
πΎ Paw Tip: Some dogs respond well to having a "go-to" spot when noises happen. Teaching Momo to go to a bed or mat when the doorbell rings can create a sense of routine and security. Try using a comfortable calming bed for this!

Final Thoughts: Whatβs Next for Momo?
Momo is a smart, affectionate dog, and with continued practice, heβll become even more confident in handling noises and new situations. Training takes time, so be patient and celebrate every little win!
πΎ Keep reinforcing calm behavior β Even after this course, keep practicing exposure training a few times a week to maintain progress.
πΆ Combine training with enrichment β The more mentally and physically fulfilled Momo is, the less likely heβll be overly reactive.
β€οΈ Stay consistent β Training works best when everyone in the household follows the same approach.
